What Is a Low-Voltage Cable Distribution Box?

A low-voltage cable distribution box is an electrical device used in low-voltage power distribution systems for branching, connecting, and distributing cables. It does not control, limit, or monitor current.

Without interrupting the main power supply, it safely and systematically branches a single low-voltage power source into multiple outputs for downstream loads. It can replace traditional cable wells or haphazard field wiring, improving the safety, standardization, and maintainability of the low-voltage power distribution system.

Working process: Main power enters the distribution box → Current is evenly distributed through the internal busbars → Each branch draws power according to load demand.

Why Don't Low-Voltage Cable Branch Boxes Need Protective Components?

This is closely related to the function of the low-voltage cable branch box itself. In the entire system, protection is upstream and connection is downstream; all protective functions are performed by the upstream circuit breaker.

What happens with a short circuit? → The short-circuit current is interrupted by the upstream circuit breaker within 0.1 seconds. The branch box only withstands instantaneous thermal stability current (e.g., 15kA/1s).

What happens with an overload? → Overload is detected and tripped by the upstream protection device. The branch box is only responsible for conduction and does not participate in the judgment.

What happens with leakage current? → Leakage protection is implemented in the terminal distribution box; the branch box does not have this function.

Technical Advantages

Cable branch boxes have significant technical advantages over traditional cable wells and can be used as a replacement.

Cable branch box

Traditional cable well

Security

Fully insulated and sealed, no risk of electric shock.

The well is damp and prone to water accumulation, posing a risk of electric shock.

Reliability

Factory-prefabricated joints have a low failure rate.

On-site production; quality depends on worker skills.

Maintain

Maintenance-free, lifespan of 30 years

Regular pumping, dredging, and inspection are required.

Size of the area

≤0.5m²

≥2m²(including operating space)

Environmental friendly

No excavation pollution

Extensive earthwork excavation damaged the road surface.

Main Application Scenarios

Urban Residential Communities: The main cable from the main transformer enters the low-voltage cable branch box, and then distributes power to each unit building.

Municipal Street Lighting Systems: In street lighting systems, a branch box is typically placed at intervals along the road to provide power to the streetlights.

Industrial and Mining Enterprises: Cable branch boxes can serve as secondary distribution points outside the factory buildings, distributing power to different workshops.

Old Urban Area Power Grid Upgrading: Branch boxes solve the problem of limited space preventing the installation of large distribution cabinets.

Installation and Maintenance Precautions

1. Waterproofing and Moisture Proofing: The bottom of the Low Voltage Cable Branch Box must be sealed with cable plugging material to prevent moisture from the underground cable trench from rising and condensing, which could cause a short circuit.

2. Reliable Grounding: Although the box is insulated, the metallic shielding layer of the cables must be reliably connected to the ground through a dedicated grounding busbar.

3. Infrared Inspection: Due to the dense nodes in the distribution box, we recommend that you regularly use an infrared thermometer to check whether the joints are overheating. This is crucial for fire prevention and is unavoidable.
