Why Is a Low-Voltage Soft Starter Distribution Cabinet Needed?

Traditional full-voltage starting presents two major problems:

Current surge: The starting current can reach 5-7 times the rated current, easily causing a sudden drop in grid voltage, affecting other equipment on the same line, and even causing circuit breakers to trip falsely.

Mechanical wear: The huge instantaneous torque can exert enormous impact on motor shafts, belts, reducers, or water pump pipelines, shortening equipment lifespan.

However, if you choose our low-voltage soft starter distribution cabinet, you can control the voltage through thyristors, allowing the motor to smoothly rise from zero voltage to the rated voltage. The starting current is typically limited to about 2-3 times the rated current.


Working Principle

During the startup phase, the Low-Voltage Soft Starter Power Distribution Cabinet changes the conduction angle of the thyristors, gradually increasing the voltage applied to the motor, allowing for a smooth start.

After startup, the bypass contactor engages, and the soft starter enters a resting state. Upon stopping, it also controls the voltage to gradually decrease, preventing water hammer effects caused by sudden shutdown.

If a soft starter is not used and a traditional motor is used instead, the sudden increase in current during startup can lead to various problems such as voltage drop, equipment impact, grid fluctuations, and mechanical wear.

Installation and Initial Commissioning Steps

Before installation, ensure the distribution room has sufficient space to accommodate the Low-Voltage Soft Starter Power Distribution Cabinet, with an operating passageway (recommended width ≥ 1.2m). The installation area should have a level floor, and the foundation channel steel must be securely welded and grounded.

During installation, confirm whether the cable entry/exit is bottom-in/bottom-out or top-in/top-out, and plan the cable trench or cable tray in advance. For soft starter cabinets >110kW, a forced air cooling device is required.

During initial commissioning, reconfirm the cabinet is undamaged, the paint is intact, and the markings are clear.

Then, check the electrical connections, verifying each primary circuit wiring to ensure there are no loose connections or incorrect connections.

A five-proof interlock test is also required, verifying the normal operation of each interlock point. Simulate short circuits and overloads using the integrated protection device to verify the accuracy of the protection actions.

If there is a secondary system, verify the normal operation of the RS485 or other communication interfaces.

Finally, conduct multiple start-up tests under no-load conditions, adjusting the start-up parameters to optimal settings.
